
Three, National University of Science & Technology (NUST) medical students, have tested positive for the deadly Covid -19 pandemic bringing the cumulative number of recorded cases in Bulawayo to 20.
The positive trio, were tested before commencing their studies.
Thorngrove Infectious Diseases Hospital in Bulawayo, is where one of the students has been admitted.
However, Bulawayo City council is considering transfering all infected people to Elangeni Training Centre for easier monitoring.
Health experts, are currently following up on the latest eight cases including four patients from Mpilo Central Hospital.
In a telephone interview with 263Bulletin, Bulawayo’s Director of Health Services Dr Edwin Sibanda articulated that” there are 20 cases that have been recorded in Bulawayo and one death. Of the total, 9 have since recovered, two are yet to be tested this week to findout if they are fully recovered”.
Dr Sibanda confirmed that ,” 3 medical students from Nust who had come to resume their studies tested positive on arrival at the institution. One was from Mutare, one from Mberengwa and the third one resides in Bulawayo.”
He added that, the health department want to monitor infected patients from on central place so as to manage the progress efficiently.
“Currently, we are at a stage where would want to monitor all of them under one roof and we are moving them to Elangeni Training Centre till they fully recover”, said Dr Sibanda.
Dr Sibanda stressed the notion, that members of the public ought to use face masks and continuously inculcate a habit of practicing social distance.
He reiterated that, local authorities have already set up five additional rapid response teams to deal with rising cases of Covid-19.
Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education,Science and Technology Development,Proffessor Amon Murwira articulated that he has not received any information concerning the NUST trio who tested positive.
“I am yet to be informed if ever that happened, in terms of generic story, we are going to do blended learning online and offline,” said Prof Murwira
“There was a story where someone went to court and lost the case on Friday claiming that as a ministry we do not know what we were doing. The issue basically is when we do what we do, we are cognisant of the guidelines stipulated by the Ministry of Health and Child Care and World Health Organisation (WHO). All I know is students will do blended learning,” added Prof Murwira.
