Biti and company granted bail

Harare magistrate Bianca Makwande, on Saturday(today) has granted MDC Alliance Vice Presidents Tendai Biti, Lynette Kore and other senior party officials $1 000 bail each for contravening Covid-19 regulations and public nuisance outside MDC headquaters, Harvest house.

Those granted bail include MDC- Alliance two vice presidents ,Tendai Biti,Lynette Kore,Lovemore Chinoputsa(National Executive),David Chimhini,Gladys Hlatswayo( secretary for international relations) ,Womberayi Nhende(deputy youth spokesperson) and Wongai Tome.

The MDC Alliance team appeared before Harare magistrate Bianca Makwande facing charges of contravening Covid-19 regulations and public nuisance outside MDC headquarters,Haverst House(now Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House) in Harare yesterday(Friday).

They were represented by Beatrice Mtetwa and Alec Muchadehama from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights(ZLHR). Mtetwa raised concerns over the conditions her clients were subjected to during detention at Harare Central Police station.

“They have been granted ZWL $1 000 bail each and were ordered to reside at their given addresses and not to interfere with state witnesses.However, we raised concerns over the Covid-19 regulations with the manner they were handled during their detention they were not given sanitizers, face masks and were forced to walk bare footed on a dirty floor”,said Mtetwa.

The two MDC camps, Alliance and MDC-T are fighting for the ownership of the party headquarters Morgan Richard House which has fallen in the hands of MDC-T faction led by Thokozani Khupe after a court ruling which recognised Khupe as the legitimate leader of the party.

The MDC-Alliance members were arrested as they sought police help to clear legitimate occupants led by Thokozani Khupe who are now in charge of the headquarters.However, the police blocked them and they broke into song leading to their arrest for their shameful public nuisance outside party headquarters.
