Thokozani Khupe
MDC- T faction led by Thokozani Khupe is currently holding a thorough house cleanse axing all the members alligned to the Chamisa faction.
Amongst those who were shown the exit door is Harare mayor Herbert Gomba and five other councillors who had been labelled bad apples due to their loyaty to embattled Chamisa.
The recent development was announced by party secretary general Douglas Mwonzora through a letter to the Minister of Local Government and Public Works articulating that the councillors are nolonger members of the MDC.
Mwonzora reiterated that he sought authority to expell the unscruplous councillors from the supreme Court of Zimbabwe ruling SC56/20.
The judgement passed by the Supreme Court in March, ruled that Nelson Chamisa was an illegitimate MDC-T president hence was replaced by Thokozani Khupe who deputised Tsvangirai prior his death, being regarded as the apparent heir to the MDC Presidency.
Currently, Khupe is serving as an interim president after the court ruling that the party ought to revert to its 2014 structures.
The axed councillors are, Herbert Gomba(ward 27),Hammy Madzingira(ward 10) Kudzai Kadzombe(ward 41),Gaudencia Marere(ward 32) Costa Mande(ward 24) and Happymore Gotora (ward 7).
The latest development by the Khupe faction aims to thwart the Chamisa camp which has since been fighting hard to bounce back.
With MDC-T Khupe holding the reins, it is imperative that they form as many alliances as they can within the party but at the same time purge the people who would prove to be the most problematic for their plans to consolidate power.
By purging the Chamisa loyalists, the Khupe faction stands to make way for its own people who represent it’s interests, although the court ruled that the recalled MPs can not be replaced. To them, it seems trimming and cutting off the vine branches and burning them is the way to go.
