Vehicle Inspectorate Department(VID) depots nationwide, will remain closed until further notice since its still difficult to mantain stipulated Covid-19 regulations at the premises, said permanent secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructual Development.
Speaking to 263Bulletin, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development ,Amos Marawa reiterated that VID depots are a hive activity just like our schools hence they remain closed until all personal protective equipment are put in place for both internal and external stakeholders.
“We put the VID in the same category as schools therefore just as schools remain shut; the department will also remain closed. Prospective drivers, for instance, need to sit down for a test as a group under supervision, and that would make it very hard to comply with social-distancing rules required by the current level two lockdown regulations,” said Marawa.
“However, government has not yet decide the fate of those whose learners licences expired during this Covid-19 induced lock down era”, said Marawa.
“It’s something we have not considered at policy level. Nobody has come forward to say we have lost out so we cannot solve a problem when there are no complaints but now that you have brought it up, we will look into it and find a way forward,” he said.
Perm Sec Marawa did not mince his words articulating that those in need of VID services like retests and defensive driving certificates, learners and drivers licences will have to wait until VID depots resume their operations when essential measures have been put in place to fight against Covid -19.
